What is a domain name?
Domain names provide easy-to-remember, word-based addresses for using and accessing information on the Internet. These addresses are translated by the Domain Name System (DNS) into numeric IP addresses behind the scenes. For example, when you type www.namesecure.com into a Web browser, the Domain Name System knows to contact NameSecure's Web server at its numerical address 205.229.232.2. For more definitions of domain-related terms, please see our Glossary.
Top
How do I know what domain name to register?
People register all sorts of domain names. Our customers have used their name, their street address, their company name and even their pet's name. Choose a domain name that is easy for you and your audience to remember, and your site will be easier to find.
Top
Can I check the status of my order?
To check the status of an order, log in to the My Account section with the user name and password you used to place the order, and then click the Check Order Status button.
Top
Do I have to provide accurate contact information when I register a domain name?
All registrars are required to collect contact information for the domain names that they register. All information you submit must be accurate at the time submitted and you must provide us with updates of any change to your contact information.
Top
How long will it be before a new domain name works?
NameSecure will begin processing your order immediately, and submit a request to the central database to verify the availability of the domain name and submit your information as the new registrant. The name will be registered within about an hour. You will receive confirmation through the e-mail account you specified as your contact e-mail address. Any services you ordered will be become fully active in about 48 hours.

Top
I'm trying to renew a domain name, but I can't log in. What should I do?
If you've forgotten your user name and/or password and can't log in, you can still renew your registration using NameSecure's Express Renewal. Visit the Renewals page for more information.
Top
Why is it important to renew?
Renewing the registration for a domain name ensures that you can continue to use the domain name for your Web site and e-mail. If you allow your registration to lapse, someone else could register the domain name and put it to use.
Top
My registration has expired, but the domain name is not available. What's going on?
There is a grace period between the expiration of a domain name and the time it is deleted from the domain name system. If a domain name has expired but is not available, it may be within this grace period. If this is the case, you can renew it through NameSecure just as if it had not yet expired, until it enters the final stage before release. After the brief grace period, there is an additional fee for redemption. The domain will be available to the general public once the grace, redemption and lock periods have ended.
Top
A domain name has expired, and it's available, but your system won't let me re-register it. What's going on?
This is a rare occurrence; please contact customer service for assistance.
Top
A domain name has expired, and somebody else registered it. Will NameSecure.com help me get it back?
Unfortunately, if your domain name registration expires and someone else registers it, there is nothing NameSecure can do. One of your options is to contact the new registrant of the domain name and inquire about transferring the name back to you. Another option is to register a different, but similar, name.

For more information, please see our Domain Name Services section.
Top
How does Web Forwarding work?

Top
How can I control how search engines rank my site when Web Forwarding is in effect?
Many search engines read the information in the Title and Meta tags of pages when analyzing a site. If you use the URL Gripper with your Web Forwarding, you can define these tags in My Account. If you are not using the URL Gripper, you can add Title and Meta tags to your pages yourself.

What is WHOIS NamePrivacy?
WHOIS NamePrivacy is an add-on service to a domain name registration that masks sensitive contact information in the
WHOIS database. This helps prevent spammers, scammers and other nefarious types from bombarding you with unsolicited
advertisements and offers, or defrauding you by stealing your sensitive contact information.
Top
What is the WHOIS database?
The WHOIS database is a public database mandated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN) - the non-profit corporation responsible for accrediting domain name registrars. This database was intended to help
people contact domain registrants for valid reasons (ex. Legal disputes). However, the WHOIS database is often misused by
nefarious sorts to data mine for sensitive contact information for the shady purposes of marketing to domain name registrants
without their explicit consent.
Top
Why do I need WHOIS NamePrivacy?
Because spammers and other illegal marketers continue to misuse the public WHOIS data to seed their own marketing
lists for spam and other nefarious activity, you should consider masking the data that is included in the WHOIS database by using NameSecure's WHOIS NamePrivacy Service. With the NameSecure WHOIS NamePrivacy Service, your contact information in the
WHOIS database is masked, thereby reducing the likelihood of spam and fraudulent activities resulting from the misuse of your
sensitive contact information.
Top
What data does/does not WHOIS NamePrivacy mask?
The NameSecure WHOIS NamePrivacy Service masks your physical mailing address, your e-mail address and your phone
number for the registrant and administrative, billing and technical contacts for a domain name. The only data not masked is the registrant's name, which alone does nefarious types little good, since a name is just a name.
Top
How does WHOIS NamePrivacy work?
NameSecure's WHOIS NamePrivacy Service masks your postal address, e-mail address and phone number in the public
WHOIS database. If someone wants to get in touch with you regarding your domain name registration on which you have enabled
WHOIS NamePrivacy, they can contact you via e-mail or by sending mail correspondence via USPS Express Mail, certified mail or
registered mail to the proxy address that we will post in the domain's public WHOIS record. We will receive all USPS Express, certified
or registered mail that is properly addressed to you, and forward it to the postal address you've associated with your domain name
registration. The e-mail address associated with the domain name in WHOIS is changed frequently so as to render it useless in the
event that it was obtained for an unauthorized use. With WHOIS NamePrivacy, you remain the registrant for the domain name, so
you retain complete control over the domain name registration and get important messages forwarded to you, while reducing spam,
unsolicited marketing material, and other undesirable outcomes associated with the unauthorized use of your sensitive contact information.
Top
Can I control my WHOIS NamePrivacy settings?
Yes. You can control the address you want the forwarded physical mail and e-mail to arrive at in the My Account manager.
And, if you want to turn off/on the WHOIS NamePrivacy Service for any reason, you may do so through My Account manager as well.
Top
Can I add WHOIS NamePrivacy to all domains in my account?
Yes. You can add WHOIS NamePrivacy to any of the domain names in your account at any time using the Upgrade Center. Just log
in to My Account manager and click on the link for the Upgrade Center. Then follow the instructions on the page. It's easy to do and takes
only minutes to add WHOIS NamePrivacy to any or all domains in your account!

What if I don't have a site yet, but I want a domain name to work?
If you don't have an existing Web site, we can forward a domain name to an under construction web page or a One-Page Mini-Site. That way your customers will see a working Web page while you are building your site. For more information, please see our Domain Name Services section.
Top
What is a One-Page Mini-Site?
NameSecure's One-Page Mini-Site is a single web page intended as a "place holder" for a domain name. The text on the page is configurable, so that you can post your contact information or other text. NameSecure currently has six different Mini-Site styles and one Under Construction page.
Top
Can I add HTML to the One-Page Mini-Site?
You may choose to use one or more editable lines for HTML. The lines have varying character limits, so you may have to experiment to find a good place for your code. NameSecure does not offer HTML support, instruction, or advice.
Top
What is the URL Gripper?
The URL Gripper feature is offered free to all customers who register a domain name. The URL Gripper keeps a domain name in the address bar of the browser as a visitor browses your site. This prevents them from seeing your long URL. You can turn the URL Gripper on or off in the My Account area.
Top
Why does my site generate an error message after I turn on the URL Gripper?
Frames, JavaScripts, and Java applets can cause technical problems when the URL Gripper is turned on. If you're getting error messages, check to see if any of these features are present.
Top
What happens to the META tags after I turn on the URL Gripper?
If you turn on the URL Gripper and enter the related domain name in your browser and view the source code of that page, you will see different HTML code. This code is required for the URL Gripper to work. By default, this new code does not include any title tag information or META tags. You can add title tag information and META tags with the Title and META Tag Generator.
Top
Why do I return to my home page when I reload a page in my site?
When you click the "Reload" or "Refresh" button on your browser, the page that is reloaded is the one indicated in the address box of the browser. After you turn on the URL Gripper, the domain name (http://www.namesecure.com) stays in the address bar, even when you are looking at a different page. This is why you return to your home page when you reload.
Top
When I bookmark a page in my site, the home page is bookmarked. Why?
When you bookmark a page, the page saved is the one indicated in the address box of your browser. This is not necessarily the page that is being displayed in the browser window. When the URL Gripper is on, the target page will usually be your home page (whose URL stays in the address box).
Top
Why do the top and left margins change depending on whether the URL Gripper is on or off?
For a web page without frames, there is a 10-pixel to 20-pixel top margin and left margin by default. The default margin values cause a slight difference in layout when the URL Gripper is turned on. One way to solve this problem is to put your pages in a table with a 10-pixel border width. Set all color options (table border and table background) to the same color as the background of your page. On most browsers, the table will be invisible to visitors and will correct the layout of your page.
Top
Why don't subdirectories show up in the location box when the URL Gripper is turned on?
This has to do with how the URL Gripper is implemented. Unless your Web site is located at a static IP address, this limitation can't be overcome.
Top
If I turn the URL Gripper on, can I use the related domain name in the path information that I write in my HTML code?
No. You must use real file locations when referencing files in HTML.
Top
Why does the domain stay in the location box after I leave my site and surf other sites?
Tthe URL Gripper can affect your external links. If you want an external site's URL to show up in the location box, you need to modify the HTML code for the link. Add a "target=_top" attribute to the hyperlink tag.
Top
What's the impact of the URL Gripper on search engine indexing?
When the URL Gripper is on, some of the HTML code for your home page is automatically generated by NameSecure. By default, Title and Meta tag information (which is often indexed by search engines) is absent. You can specify the Title and Meta tag information displayed when the URL Gripper is on in My Account.
