What does it mean if my domain name is "locked"?

Most registrars have a concept of "locking" domains to help prevent unauthorized transfer outs. This is a protective measure for their customers in response to ICANN transfer policy. Because of that policy, without a "lock" capability, registrars' customers may suffer egregious domain name theft and loss of their domain name.

However, registrars must, in order to keep their accreditation with ICANN, provide an easy, available means for customers to unlock their domain names if they want to move them. Most registrars will seek proof of identification prior to unlocking a domain name.
